holy week musings

yesterday was palm sunday, the beginning of holy week.

it was our family’s fourth year to take part in the commemoration of Jesus’ triumphal entry to jerusalem at the mary immaculate parish (MIP) or popularly known as the nature’s church in las pinas city (see article about this church at https://wanderingjouster.com/2012/09/30/moonwalking-in-nature/.)

as part of the special eucharistic celebration, the gospel reading was presented through a mini-play. my sons and i were all ears despite not having a place to sit on. yes, the MIP was crowded last night.  without a doubt, those who were in attendance had varied reasons why they came. the same thing why they were holding “palaspas” (palm fronds) to be blessed. our family included.

honestly, it seemed i have just carried on the religious tradition in our family of  having a blessed “palaspas” during palm sunday. it’s like i cannot let this feast pass without bringing a palm branch to be sprinkled on with holy water. afterwards, i would hang it either on our door or above the window as a protection from evil spirits. this i saw and learned from my grandparents and parents.
writing this brief article now makes me ponder more whether observing this custom for the past years has manifested my strong christian faith. i think i know what the answer is, but i would like to give myself time to still do a lot of reflection as i join the whole christendom in remembering the life and passion of Christ.
