one bedan christmas 2013

with the calamities  that had befallen the philippines, many companies, organizations, and academic institutions scrapped their annual christmas party to empathize and sympathize with these victims.

our school, san beda college alabang, thought otherwise. yes, we are one with our fellow filipinos especially those who were affected by the super typhoon yolanda and we had done our extensive operation in extending our help to them, but we felt this school tradition should go on.
as expressed by our rector-president rev. fr. anselm manalastas, osb, during his homily in our morning eucharistic celebration yesterday,  our main reason in holding this institutional christmas party is celebrating God’s greatest gift to us. personally, he likewise felt that we should not stop ourselves from doing so.
we do acknowledge the sad fate of our brethren and express our thanks for saving us from experiencing the wrath of nature, yet a big part of us believes that life has to move on for all of us and sustain the spirit of hope.
what made this yearly gathering a little different though was the absence of well-catered sumptuous dishes, the singing competition participated in by each department and the raffling off of costly items. in lieu of these well awaited parts of the program, we partook in a very simple filipino meal, wished and prayed for our names to be drawn for a limited 500-peso cash prize, and received a red big umbrella bearing the san beda seal as memento from the monks.

of course, the “envelope” which is given to all the employees of sbca for their tenure of service would never be taken away lest there would be an uprising. hahahahaha. for those who have been with this school for long, it’s obvious that they had the widest grin of the day.
frankly,  many attendees might have not been satisfied with what was served to us (hey, we had bottomless red gulaman drink!Smiley)  but it gave me joy to be with the members of my san beda family especially those fellow part time teachers whom i rarely see this second semester.
