beating the heat on labor day!

with today’s temperature escalating, we had one simple way of beating it at our veranda early this afternoon.

the ever in-demand summer filipino dessert: halo-halo.

halo-halo (from the tagalog word ‘halo” which means mix) is a mixture of  shaved ice and evaporated milk to which are added different ingredients such as boiled kidney beans, garbanzos, sugar palm fruit (kaong), coconut sport (macapuno), and plantains caramelized in sugar, jackfruit (langkâ), gulaman, tapioca, nata de coco, sweet potato (kamote), cheese, pounded crushed young rice (pinipig).
this is easy to prepare, thus becoming a lucrative business during this season. you just have to place all the ingredients in a bowl or any tall container, follow it with the shaved ice, sprinkle with sugar and top it with  leche flan, yam (ube) or ice cream. now, the presence of IC in restos makes the price higher.
well, our neighbor prepares a delicious halo-halo which is only sold for php 25.00. it can even give chowking’s pricey halo-halo a tight competition. the fact that the business owner, herself, enjoyingly and amiably prepares it while we wait, makes it a labor of a neighbor’s love.  truly fitting for what we are celebrating today –  labor day! 🙂
it’s no surprise if i had to buy an extra one because i knew that one of us would be  asking for more.

and it’s not only one who did ask! there were three – arthur, lancelot and i. hahahaha…
i just wonder how many servings will my boys consume if ever they will taste the djc halo-halo in tiwi, albay. touted as the best tasting halo-halo in the philippines, i have yet to find another mixture that will dethrone it.
oh my! my mouth is watering by just the thought of it.
