go native!

Burberry, Chanel, Coach, Dolce & Gabbana, Dooney & Bourke, Fendi, Gucci, Hermès, Kate Spade, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Ralph Lauren… these are just some of the top brands of designer handbags in the world. i don’t own any of these and believe me, i do not dream of owning one if it will just endanger my life…

but i do have my own collection of bags which i take pride in using, and these bags are proudly bicol-made!

native bags 003

nat5to date, i haven’t seen any duplication of these bags that i possess. lucky me because i have a direct contact with a designer and maker of this kind of bags that are made from abaca, karagumoy, bangkwan, and macrame.
i accidentally discovered this designer  when a good friend-kumare had an exhibit at the world trade center in support of a denr project. she invited me to visit their booth and was very kind to gift me a native bag right there and then. this is  the karagumoy bag with a flower in the middle. impressed by its simple design, i immediately asked who made it. i did not waste time contacting the person who is actually very familiar to me being a schoolmate (one batch younger) and daughter of my geometry teacher in third year at bicol university high school. our communication started not only a businesswoman-customer relationship but  a new kind of  friendship.  nerissa basco-araojo was the answer to my “problem” as regards simple teachers’ day and christmas gifts of  my three sons when they were still studying in the previous school where i taught. she would always accommodate my order and would freight them as scheduled. our communication though had a lapse when i took a one-year leave from teaching. it was only last february 12, 2012 that i had a chance to see her again when i went home to bicol. we had a quick  exchange of pleasantries since we were with our respective companions. i even failed to inquire about her business. it was only two weeks ago that i again thought of her. thanks to facebook, i hurriedly sent her a private message inquiring if she was still very much into bag designing and making. within that day, she responded and sent me photos of the bags that i might want to look at. and last tuesday, september 11, i received the bags which i have liked at first sight. as always, these bags were prettier up-close and personal. again, ness’s creations  did not disappointment me. and the best part here is that, these bags were very much affordable…
so what are your criteria in picking the best bag for you? price? brand name? durability? quality? craftsmanship?
i am sure, you will delete brand name and price the moment you get hold of these bags from nesscraft philippine industries in  tabaco, legazpi city.
if you want one, contact ness at 09209558050;09228614640 or through her fb address ness.basco@facebook.com.

if you become successful, you will no longer envy aling dionisia pacquiao  for owning an hermes (pronunciation: Air-Mez) bag…
