i am in the middle of finishing my powerpoint presentation for a grammar lesson in my communication skills class tomorrow when my youngest son started singing the filipino folksong which they presented in the “sayawit contest” in their school  last week.

tonight, it’s the nth time that i heard him sing “paruparong bukid”. i stopped myself from telling that to him for he would surely be offended and i would be responsible in curtailing any ambition of his to be the next ruben tagalog or diomedes maturan… so, he continued singing with  gusto like a broken record while i continued doing my business.
i could not help smiling while listening to lancelot.  i am thankful that at a young age, he has already learned to appreciate a part of the filipino culture —  the folk songs.
it is at this point that i started singing in my mind the bicol folksong which my maternal grandfather taught us. i immediately surfed the net hoping that i could find the complete lyrics and just copy-paste (sotto style) it to this article. i was unsuccessful after making several attempts. having known this by heart,  i will  write the lyrics here and any error i commit is purely based on experiencing my senior momen. i am not sure of the title of this very memorable folksong, so just allow me to use “si lulay”:
SI LULAY
SI LULAY, LABI-LABING OGMA
NA SIYA, NAGPAPARABURDA
NING MGA PANYONG, MAGAGAYON
NGUNIT ANONG SWERTE, PAGDATING KANG DUROS
LUMINAYOG GABOS
LAYOG NA DAW PANYO
PANYONG BINURDAHAN
DUMAN KA UMOGPA, SA TANGOD KANG SIMBAHAN
KUNG MAHILING MO MAN
ANG MGA SAKRISTAN
IYO MONG PADAKPON,
IYO MONG PADAKPON,
SI CONRADONG GWAPO
if you are familiar with this song, you will agree that it has a very sweet tune. it is for this reason that i would sing this to my three sons when lulling them to sleep. oh, yes. i turned this folksong into a lullaby. and believe me. it was very effective. aside from this folksong, “sarong banggi”  was also a favorite baby lullaby substitute.  comparing it to “si lulay”  the lyrics were very much available since this is an immortal bicol folksong. luckily, i was able to chance upon the complete lyrics and a shortened  version of this lullaby of the heart. courtesy goes to http://www.tribephilippines.com/3No/Fn3%20Sarung-Banggi-Lyrics.html  and gobicol_logo

version 1:
SARUNG BANGGI
Potenciano B. Gregorio, Sr.
(original composer)
Sarung Banggi
Sa Higdaan
Nakadangog ako
Nin huni nin sarong gamgam
Sa luba ko katurugan,
Bako kundi
Simong boses, Iyo palan
Dagos ako bangon
Si sakuyang mata iminuklat
Kadtung kadikluman
Ako ay nangalagkalag
Kasu ihiling ko si sakuyang mata sa itaas
Simong lawog nahiling ko, maliwanag
Kadtung kadikluman, Kan mahiling taka
Namundo kong puso, tulos naugma
Minsan di nahaloy, idtong napagmasdan
Sagkod Nuarin pa man,
Dai ko malilingawan
Magpoon na ika sakuyang namutan
Ako nakamate nin kaginhawahan
Pati an puso kong tagub kapungawan
Ngunyan burabod na nin tunay na kaogmahan
version 2:
SARUNG BANGGI
NaAramKo
Sarung banggi, sa higdaan
Nakadangog ako nin huni nin sarong gamgam
Sa loba ko katurogan
Bako kundi simong boses iyo palan
Dagos ako bangon
Tukaw ako banko, kalaykalay sako . . . Bitis
Balik ako kama suklob ako tamong, piripisi sako . . . Mata
Si sakong paghiling pasiring sa itaas
Simong lawog nahiling ko maliwanag
the second  version obviously contained a funny twist in the second stanza, and i am sure, NaAramKo is not the only group who injected humor  to this most-loved bicol folksong.
“si lulay”  and “sarong banggi” are two bicol folksongs which my twins have memorized very well. lancelot has still to work on “si lulay” once he has tired himself singing about that butterfly.

for me, this will serve as a reminder to my three kings that they are bicolanos despite not knowing how to speak my first language.  this will also be their link to my rich bicol roots and i want them to feel the pride of being an uragon
